Messi in Tears After Spain End Argentina’s World Cup Dream

Lionel Messi fought back tears after Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

The 39-year-old captain admitted that Spain deserved the victory after dominating the match and limiting Argentina’s attacking opportunities.

“They were better, to be honest,” Messi said after the final whistle. “We lost the game, and we accept that.”

Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal just 37 seconds into the second period of extra time, handing Spain their second men’s World Cup title.

Argentina had entered the final hoping to become the first country since Brazil in 1962 to win consecutive men’s World Cups. However, Spain controlled possession, created more chances and prevented Messi from influencing the game.

Spain recorded 20 shots compared with Argentina’s one and completed 845 passes, almost twice Argentina’s total of 433.

“I feel sad, but I know that we gave everything,” Messi said. “This defeat does not erase everything we have achieved. I want to thank my teammates, our supporters, and the entire country.”

Messi Falls Short of Another World Cup Triumph

Most of the 80,663 spectators inside MetLife Stadium appeared to be supporting Messi as he chased a second World Cup title.

Instead, the Argentina captain watched Spain celebrate while he and his teammates acknowledged their supporters at the southern end of the stadium.

Messi had led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title and helped the country win consecutive Copa América trophies. He returned for the 2026 tournament seeking another historic triumph.

Despite the defeat, Messi enjoyed an impressive campaign, scoring eight goals and providing four assists as Argentina reached another final.

He also increased his World Cup total to 21 goals. France striker Kylian Mbappé later moved ahead of him with 22 after scoring twice in the third-place match.

Messi became the first player to start three World Cup finals. He also raised his international tally to 125 goals, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 146.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni praised his captain’s contribution and described him as the greatest footballer in history.

“I hope everyone is proud of him and everything he has achieved,” Scaloni said. “He is the best player ever to step onto a football pitch.”

Spain Successfully Restricts Messi

Spain made stopping Messi a central part of its strategy.

“The first objective was to keep Messi under control,” Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said.

Messi managed only 15 touches during the first half and 54 throughout the match. He struggled to receive the ball in dangerous areas and was unable to create a clear scoring opportunity.

MetLife Stadium has also been the scene of previous disappointment for Messi. He announced his international retirement after Argentina lost to Chile on penalties in the 2016 Copa América final at the venue.

He reversed that decision 47 days later and eventually led Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022.

After Sunday’s final whistle, several Spanish players approached Messi to console him. He later sat on the pitch, visibly disappointed, before joining his teammates to receive their runners-up medals.

Spain’s players formed a guard of honour for Argentina, but Messi struggled to smile as he walked towards the podium.

Spain Becomes Football’s Leading Nation

The victory confirmed Spain’s growing dominance in international football.

Spain became the first country to hold the men’s and women’s World Cup titles at the same time. The men’s team also completed a dominant tournament in which its possession-based football and attacking depth overwhelmed opponents.

As Spain’s players lifted the trophy and celebrated under falling confetti, Messi quietly left the field with his head lowered.

For Messi, the defeat ended another remarkable World Cup campaign without the fairytale conclusion many supporters had expected. For Spain, it marked a return to the top of world football.
