Meta Announces 8,000 Global Job Cuts to Focus on AI and Efficiency

Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, has begun notifying employees worldwide about 8,000 job cuts as part of a major restructuring aimed at improving efficiency and accelerating its artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives.

The layoffs started on Wednesday morning in Asia, with staff in the United States expected to be informed later in the day, according to internal memos reported by Bloomberg.

The reductions mainly affect engineering and product teams, while the company simultaneously reassigns around 7,000 employees to newly created AI-focused roles, including work on autonomous agents and other AI products.

At the end of March, Meta employed just under 80,000 people. The company says the restructuring will create a flatter organisational structure with smaller, faster-moving teams, designed to improve productivity and accountability.

“Many teams can now operate with a flatter structure, allowing pods to move faster and take more ownership,” said Meta’s Head of People, Janelle Gale, in an internal memo.

Workforce Concerns and Employee Response

The restructuring has stirred unease among employees. Concerns include job security and new internal monitoring methods used to improve AI systems, such as keystroke and screen activity tracking.

More than 1,000 employees reportedly signed a petition urging the company to limit device-level data collection. Others have voiced worries about declining morale and uncertainty tied to ongoing restructuring cycles.

Financial and Strategic Goals

Analysts at Evercore estimate that the layoffs could save Meta approximately $3 billion, helping offset costs associated with the company’s aggressive AI investments.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has emphasised AI as Meta’s core strategic priority, committing over $100 billion in capital expenditure this year to AI infrastructure and capabilities.

Meta’s move aims to keep pace with competitors like Alphabet’s Google and OpenAI in AI models, agents, and enterprise applications.

In recent years, the company has combined multiple rounds of layoffs with expanded use of AI tools internally, including coding support and workflow automation, as part of a broader efficiency drive.

In short, Meta is reducing staff while shifting talent to AI-focused teams, signalling a decisive pivot toward artificial intelligence and more streamlined operations.
