A New Auto Maintenance Startup Just Launched in SA with $311k Seed Funding

South African start-up ServiceMyCar, which has set up an online vehicle maintenance and repair marketplace, has begun operations with seed funding of ZAR5 million (US$311,000) and is preparing a Series A round in January 2021.

The auto startup was founded in January 2019 by father and son duo Athol and Aidan Quin, and introduced to the public in August 2020, ServiceMyCar provides customers with various vehicle repair or service quotes from different workshops located in the vicinity of the customer and allows them to select a workshop of their choice and state the date they would prefer the repair to commence.

The platform helps customers to make informed decisions about which workshop their vehicle would like to be serviced at, providing a previously unstructured marketplace with structure.

“Through many years of motor industry experience we have identified that this is a huge problem for both workshops and customers. Customers face the challenge of finding a trustworthy, transparent and cost-effective workshop whilst workshops – both franchise and non-franchise – face the challenge of increasing volume, securing bookings and having reliable customer support,” Aidan Quin said.

The ServiceMyCar Workshop Partner Network in the Western Cape consists of 70 independent and OEM workshops, with the start-up aiming to expand before the end of this year to Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. With the help of seed funding worth ZAR5 million (US$311,000) secured by ServiceMyCar earlier this year, this is being done, and Aidan said it plans to raise a Series A round in January to grow nationwide.

“We also plan on expanding into the rest of Africa, particularly Nigeria, Botswana and Namibia. Our focus is then to target other developing economies outside of Africa,” he said.
