NGX Suspends Trading in Shares of Three Insurance Firms

The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) has suspended trading in the shares of three insurance companies, Regency Alliance Insurance Plc, International Energy Insurance Plc, and Universal Insurance Plc.

The suspension, which took effect on Monday, 1 September 2025, comes after the companies failed to submit their audited financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2024, as mandated by NGX regulations.

Under Rule 3.1 of the Rules for Filing of Accounts and Treatment of Default Filing, companies listed on the exchange are required to submit their audited financial results within a specified timeframe.

When companies fail to meet this deadline, NGX is authorised to issue a second filing deficient notification and suspend trading in their securities. The suspension will remain in place until the affected companies submit the overdue financial statements and comply with the exchange’s reporting rules.

This move shows the importance of compliance and the role of NGX in upholding market integrity. Shareholders of the three suspended companies will not be able to trade their stocks on the exchange until the financial statements are submitted and verified.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the regulatory body overseeing the Nigerian capital market, has also been notified of the suspension, in line with established procedures.

In an effort to further improve market transparency, SEC Nigeria recently unveiled a newly redesigned website, aimed at enhancing digital engagement and improving investor protection. The redesign is part of the Commission’s broader initiative to modernise its operations and make financial information more accessible to investors and market participants.

This development reflects both NGX and SEC’s commitment to fostering a transparent, accountable, and efficient financial market, reinforcing investor confidence in the Nigerian capital market.
