Polysmart launches $60m facility to recycle 15m plastic bottles daily

Polysmart Packaging Limited has unveiled a $60 million recycling facility designed to process up to 15 million plastic bottles every day. The new plant aims to address the growing challenge of plastic pollution by converting discarded materials into high-quality resources.

Operating at full capacity, the facility is expected to process 100,000 tonnes of mixed plastics annually. This scale of operation will allow the company to recycle approximately 6.5 billion PET bottles per year.

The primary output of the plant will be food-grade recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET). By producing rPET, Polysmart intends to provide a sustainable alternative to virgin plastics, catering to the increasing demand from beverage and consumer goods manufacturers for recycled packaging materials.

Impact on the plastic waste ecosystem

The launch of the $60 million recycling facility comes as Nigeria and many other African nations face intensifying pressure to manage single-use plastic waste. Much of the plastic currently discarded in the country ends up in landfills or clogs urban drainage systems, contributing to environmental degradation.

The production of food-grade rPET is a critical technical development. Unlike lower-grade recycled plastics used for non-food items, food-grade rPET undergoes rigorous processing to ensure it is safe for use in packaging that comes into direct contact with consumables. This capability allows local manufacturers to reduce their reliance on imported virgin resins, which are subject to foreign exchange volatility.

Industry analysts suggest that the facility’s massive scale will necessitate a more structured approach to waste collection. To reach the target of 15 million bottles daily, the plant will require a reliable supply chain involving waste pickers, aggregators, and formal recycling collectors.

The expansion of such large-scale recycling infrastructure is expected to support the circular economy by creating new roles within the waste management sector. However, the efficiency of the plant will depend on the ability of local collection networks to sort and deliver the necessary volumes of PET plastic consistently.

As Polysmart moves toward full operational capacity, the focus will shift to the stability of the plastic supply chain and the integration of the facility into the wider domestic manufacturing ecosystem.
