Presco Plc, a major integrated agro-industrial company steered by Nigerian billionaire Rasheed Sarumi, is committing $400 million towards a significant expansion of its palm oil cultivation and processing capabilities across four states in Nigeria.
The strategic investment aims to bolster domestic palm oil production, with substantial pledges of $200 million each allocated to Ondo and Abia states. This latest financial commitment follows earlier investments totalling $171.6 million that Presco had deployed for plantation development in Ghana and Nigeria.
The expansion aligns with Nigeria’s broader economic diversification goals and efforts to reduce reliance on imported food products. Presco, a key player in the West African palm oil sector, is involved in oil palm cultivation, crude palm oil extraction, as well as the refining and fractionation of palm kernel oil.
Rasheed Sarumi, who holds a controlling interest in Presco Plc, has consistently championed local agricultural development and value addition. His vision for Presco involves leveraging advanced agricultural practices and processing technologies to enhance efficiency and output, thereby contributing significantly to Nigeria’s food security objectives and export potential.
Driving Self-Sufficiency in Nigeria’s Palm Oil Sector
Nigeria, once a leading global producer of palm oil, currently struggles with a significant supply deficit, necessitating substantial imports to meet domestic demand. The Central Bank of Nigeria has previously highlighted the vast potential for import substitution in the sector, encouraging local investment to bridge the gap.
Presco’s $400 million expansion is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs across the agricultural value chain, from plantation management and harvesting to processing and distribution. The investment in Ondo and Abia states will likely focus on developing new oil palm plantations, upgrading existing facilities, and establishing new processing mills capable of handling increased volumes of fresh fruit bunches. The company’s expansion strategy extends to further cultivation in other states to meet the target of four major areas of operation.
The move also underscores a growing trend among Nigerian conglomerates to invest heavily in critical economic sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and energy, thereby reducing the country’s vulnerability to global commodity price fluctuations and strengthening its industrial base. Presco’s integrated approach ensures that the entire process, from planting to packaged oil, remains under its control, promoting quality and consistency.
Industry analysts project that such large-scale investments are crucial for Nigeria to achieve self-sufficiency in palm oil production within the next decade. The company’s financial performance, which has seen consistent growth, supports its capacity for these ambitious capital outlays.
The implementation of this multi-million dollar project is anticipated to commence in phases, with initial focus on land preparation and seedling development in the designated states. This significant capital injection by Presco Plc is poised to reshape Nigeria’s palm oil landscape, offering substantial economic benefits and reinforcing the nation’s drive towards agricultural renaissance.
