Seven Practical Ways to Stay Safe and Alert in Nigeria

Reports of armed robbery, abductions, and local unrest make personal safety a top priority across the country. From petty theft in busy markets to kidnappings on highways and online scams, staying alert has become essential for families, students, and commuters.

While communities continue to adapt, individuals can reduce risk by practising consistent safety habits. The following seven practical measures focus on awareness, preparation, and discretion to help you move through public and private spaces with confidence.

1. Stay Situationally Aware

Always pay attention to your surroundings. Whether in public spaces, markets, or transit hubs, avoid distractions like your phone while walking. Take note of exits, security personnel, and safe spots whenever you enter a new location. Being alert helps you react quickly if a situation seems unsafe.

2. Limit Information Sharing

Keep personal details private. Avoid sharing travel plans, financial information, or daily routines on social media. Kidnappers and scammers often gather information from public posts. Refrain from posting real-time locations, displays of wealth, or photos of valuables to reduce your exposure to risk.

3. Vary Routines and Routes

Avoid predictability. Change your commute times and routes to work, school, or other frequent destinations. Criminals often watch routines before attempting theft or abduction. Varying your schedule makes it harder for anyone to track or target you.

4. Secure Your Home and Vehicle

Ensure your home has reliable locks, good lighting, and, if available, a neighbourhood watch or security service. For vehicles, always lock doors and roll up windows, even when stopped briefly. Park in well-lit, guarded areas and never leave valuables visible in your car. Small precautions can prevent opportunistic theft.

5. Use Trusted Transport Options

Rely on verified ride-hailing apps, licensed taxi services, or drivers you know personally. Avoid unmarked or unofficial vehicles, especially at night. Share your travel details with a trusted contact, so someone knows your location in case of an emergency.

6. Build a Trusted Safety Network

Create a network of emergency contacts, including family, friends, and local authorities. Know your local police station and any reputable community vigilante or neighbourhood watch groups. Join local WhatsApp or community groups for real-time safety alerts. Avoid isolated areas whenever possible, especially after dark.

7. Keep Emergency Essentials

Prepare for emergencies by saving important numbers, carrying a charged power bank, some cash, and a valid ID. Have a simple plan with family or close contacts for check-ins during travel, unrest, or unexpected incidents. Being prepared ensures faster responses in critical situations.
