The Sokoto State Police Command is mourning the sudden death of Inspector Adamu Isah, who collapsed shortly after participating in a weekly physical fitness exercise on Wednesday.
Isah, a police officer attached to the Department of Operations, suffered the collapse following his participation in the Command’s weekly walkathon, a routine health and fitness programme designed to maintain the operational readiness of personnel.
The incident has left the Sokoto Command in shock, as the officer was reportedly active during the exercise before his health deteriorated rapidly. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead shortly after the collapse.
Physical fitness exercises, including walkathons and morning drills, are mandatory components of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) training regime. These activities are intended to ensure that officers can handle the physical demands of field operations, patrols, and security interventions. The Department of Operations, where Isah served, is particularly critical to the command’s ability to deploy personnel and manage tactical responses within the state.
While the official cause of death has not been released by medical authorities, health experts often point to the risks of sudden cardiac arrest or heat-related complications during intense physical activity, particularly in the high-temperature environment characteristic of Sokoto State.
The death of Inspector Isah comes at a time when the Nigeria Police Force has been encouraging personnel to maintain healthy lifestyles to cope with the high-stress nature of security work in Nigeria. However, this incident raises questions regarding the medical screening of officers before they engage in strenuous mandatory fitness routines.
Colleagues of the deceased described him as a dedicated officer of the command. The Sokoto State Police Command is expected to provide further details regarding the funeral arrangements and any internal review of the exercise protocols following the tragedy.
The command has not yet confirmed if an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
