Top 10 Countries With the Most Approved Asylum Claims in Canada in 2025

Canada recorded more than 107,000 asylum claims in 2025, showing continued pressure on the country’s immigration and refugee system.

According to figures from the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, 107,802 asylum claims were referred for processing between January and December 2025. Out of this number, 50,067 claims were approved, while 14,619 were rejected.

The data also showed 7,944 abandoned cases and 6,832 withdrawn or administratively closed claims. In total, 79,462 cases were finalised during the year.

Canada’s Asylum System Faces Growing Pressure

The figures show that Canada remains a major destination for people seeking protection. However, the rising number of claims has also created a large backlog, with many applicants still waiting for decisions.

India recorded the highest number of rejected claims, with 2,309 cases. Mexico followed with 1,836 rejected claims, while Nigeria recorded 1,377 rejected cases. Haiti and Bangladesh also had notable rejection figures, with 1,274 and 867 cases respectively.

Haiti Leads Approved Asylum Claims in Canada

Haiti recorded the highest number of approved asylum claims in Canada in 2025, with 4,511 successful applications.

The country also had a large number of pending cases, with 29,349 claims still awaiting decisions. This shows that Haiti remains one of the biggest sources of asylum demand in Canada.

Türkiye Ranks Second With Over 4,000 Approved Claims

Türkiye had 4,057 approved asylum claims in 2025. The data also showed 227 rejected claims, while 4,106 cases remained pending.

This placed Türkiye among the top countries whose nationals received protection in Canada during the year.

Nigeria Records 3,463 Approved Claims

Nigeria ranked third, with 3,463 approved asylum claims out of 6,765 applications.

However, Nigeria also recorded 1,377 rejected claims, while 21,573 cases were still pending. The large backlog shows that many Nigerian applicants are still waiting for final decisions.

Iran, Mexico and Pakistan Also Record High Approvals

Iran recorded 3,456 approved claims from 7,114 applications, with 11,448 cases still pending.

Mexico followed with 3,012 approved claims and 1,836 rejected cases. It also had a large backlog of 24,059 pending claims.

Pakistan recorded 2,763 approved asylum claims, with 462 rejections and 8,727 pending cases.

Colombia and Uganda Make the List

Colombia recorded 2,264 approved claims in 2025, while 574 were rejected. The country also had 8,704 pending cases.

Uganda also featured among the top countries, with 2,089 approved asylum claims.
