Why MTN is Building West Africa’s Largest Data Center in Nigeria

Nigeria is not being left behind in the digital transformation reshaping how societies operate. MTN Nigeria, the largest telecom operator in the country, is spearheading a monumental project: constructing what will be West Africa’s largest data center.

Located in Nigeria, this facility promises to revolutionize the digital landscape not just locally but across the entire region.

The need for enhanced digital infrastructure

Mohammed Rufai, the Chief Technical Officer of MTN Nigeria, recently revealed exciting details about this ambitious project. The data center, equipped with 1,500 racks and boasting Tier 4 status, will be the largest in Africa. Rufai explained that this development is essential to meet the surging demand for data services and digital transformation in Nigeria.

This initiative is a part of a broader movement within the country as various tech giants, including Airtel Africa, have begun similar projects aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.

The importance of robust digital frameworks has never been more apparent, especially in a post-pandemic world where business, education, and personal communications increasingly rely on digital platforms.

Why Nigeria? Why Now?

The decision to establish this facility in Nigeria is strategic. As the epicenter of tech innovation and entrepreneurship in West Africa, Nigeria presents a fertile ground for such a significant investment.

The data center is expected to cater to the growing needs for data storage and processing, which are being propelled by an increase in digital activities across the country.

Rufai pointed out that the rapid growth in data usage and the emergence of new digital services have stretched the existing infrastructure to its limits. “We see a high demand in the market, with data usage growing significantly.

To cater to this demand and prepare for future growth, we are expanding and modernizing our data center capacity now,” he said.

A Boon for Businesses and Content Providers

The new data center will not only support MTN’s infrastructure but will also serve as a crucial resource for businesses across Nigeria. Companies will be able to forgo maintaining their own server rooms, as MTN’s facility will provide the necessary space and services to help them digitalize their operations and enhance efficiency.

Moreover, the data center will improve the delivery of content from major tech companies like Meta and Google. By hosting this content locally, the data center will bring it closer to Nigerian users, enhancing access speeds and overall user experience.

This local hosting is expected to significantly boost network efficiency and reduce latency in content delivery.

What to expect

The MTN data center is not just a technological endeavor; it’s a catalyst for economic growth. By providing scalable and adaptable infrastructure, it enables businesses, especially MSMEs, to leverage cloud services and other digital solutions.

This infrastructure supports innovation, efficiency, and competitiveness across various sectors of the economy.

Dr. Ayotunde Coker, CEO of Open Access Data Center, noted that Nigeria is poised to attract over $600 million in investments through such data centers. This influx is expected to create thousands of jobs and stimulate economic activity across the region.

Aligned with MTN’s Ambition 2025 strategy, the project also underscores the company’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals. The data center plans to employ efficient cooling systems and a mix of traditional energy sources, gas, and renewable energy.

This approach will not only ensure operational efficiency but also reduce the facility’s carbon footprint.
