Xenophobic Attacks: FG to Evacuate Nigerians from South Africa

The Nigerian government is taking decisive steps to evacuate its citizens from South Africa amidst the rise of xenophobic violence and anti-foreigner protests, particularly in Durban. This action follows a series of discussions between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Mr. Ronald Lamola, with the evacuation set to begin soon.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu expressed deep concern over the ongoing harassment and reports of extra-judicial killings of Nigerians in South Africa, stating that the Nigerian government could not ignore such violence. She made it clear that the safety of Nigerians is the government’s top priority and that those responsible for these attacks must be held accountable.

Despite initial resistance from South African officials, Nigerian authorities are determined to move forward with the evacuation of citizens who wish to return home. The violence, though somewhat controlled by security forces, has caused enough alarm for the Nigerian government to advise its nationals to stay indoors and avoid the violence-stricken areas.

The Nigerian Minister also warned that the rising hostility could harm South African businesses in Nigeria, urging a diplomatic resolution. She raised concerns about Nigerian children being bullied in schools, with some being targeted by classmates shouting “return to your country.” South African authorities have pledged to tackle the issue, particularly in the educational system.

While some voices in Nigeria are calling for economic retaliation against South African businesses operating in the country, experts caution that such actions could harm Nigerian interests without affecting the perpetrators of the violence. As tensions continue, the Nigerian government remains committed to engaging South Africa diplomatically to resolve the situation and ensure the safety of its citizens.
