3 Nigerian Celebrities Who Had Brain Tumours and Surgery

On World Brain Day, it’s worth reflecting on the unseen battles many people face with one of the most vital organs in the human body, the brain. While we often associate celebrities with fame, glamour, and success, some of them have quietly endured life-threatening health scares involving their brains.

In Nigeria, a few well-known public figures have faced brain tumours and related surgeries.

Their experiences not only remind us of the fragility of life but also highlight the importance of early diagnosis, support, and resilience. Here are the Nigerian celebrities who have confronted brain-related health challenges head-on.

Bisola Badmus

Yoruba actress Bisola Badmus also opened up recently about her private health struggles. She revealed she had been battling encephalopathy, a brain disorder which was triggered by brain tumours.

Her condition gradually worsened over three years, eventually affecting her vision and memory.

At one point, she said she couldn’t recognise people or even complete sentences. While surgery wasn’t an immediate option for her case, consistent medication became a lifeline.

Fortunately, after publicly speaking out, several kind-hearted Nigerians came forward to offer support including sponsorship for potential surgery abroad and funding for her son’s education.

Her courage in sharing her story has sparked both awareness and compassion within the Nigerian entertainment community.

Julius Agwu

Veteran comedian Julius Agwu was at the peak of his career when his life took an unexpected turn. After experiencing a serious seizure in Nigeria, further medical tests abroad revealed he had three tumours in his brain, one large mass and two smaller growths.

The diagnosis came as a shock, but it spurred swift medical intervention. In 2015, Agwu underwent a complex four-hour surgery at a hospital in Houston, Texas.

Thankfully, the operation was successful. He later expressed gratitude for surviving such a major ordeal and even celebrated with a thanksgiving track to honour his journey.

Although rumours of a relapse surfaced the following year, his team quickly dismissed them. His recovery has served as a source of hope for many facing similar health challenges.

Zack Orji

Earlier this year, Nollywood icon Zack Orji had a frightening health scare when he collapsed in his bathroom. Thankfully, quick intervention by his colleagues saved his life.

According to Orji, he was lying helpless on the floor when fellow actor Benedict Johnson found him. Unable to stand or speak, he was carried downstairs with help from another colleague and rushed to the hospital.

It was later confirmed that Orji required not just one, but two brain surgeries. The procedures were carried out by Dr. Biodun Ogungbo, a respected neurosurgeon in Abuja.

Following his recovery, the actor publicly credited the government and medical team for their role in helping him heal.

His story served as a powerful reminder that even those who appear strong and steady in public can be fighting invisible battles behind closed doors.
