African nations have secured a critical health lifeline following the launch of a global mpox vaccine stockpile designed to accelerate the delivery of doses to the continent’s most vulnerable populations.
The initiative is aimed at streamlining the distribution of vaccines to children, families, and communities currently facing the highest risk of infection. This move comes as health authorities struggle to contain the spread of the virus across several African regions, where limited access to preventative medicine has hindered containment efforts.
Officials coordinating the launch stated that the initiative will help them quickly get vaccines to those most at risk, ensuring that the response is not delayed by procurement hurdles or supply chain bottlenecks that have characterised previous health emergencies on the continent.
Mpox outbreak trends and vaccine distribution
The launch follows a worrying increase in mpox cases across Africa, particularly the emergence and spread of the Clade Ib strain. This variant, which has been heavily linked to outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and neighbouring countries, is considered more transmissible and potentially more severe than previous strains.
In August 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the mpox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). Despite this designation, African countries have faced a stark disparity in vaccine availability compared to wealthier nations in the Global North, leading to calls from the African Union (AU) and Africa CDC for urgent vaccine equity.
The global stockpile mechanism is intended to bridge this gap by creating a reserved supply of vaccines that can be deployed rapidly based on epidemiological data. This system reduces the reliance of individual African governments on bilateral negotiations with pharmaceutical companies, which often result in delayed deliveries or unfair pricing.
In Nigeria, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has maintained strict surveillance of mpox cases. As a major regional hub for trade and travel in West Africa, Nigeria remains highly susceptible to the introduction and spread of new strains. The availability of a coordinated stockpile provides a strategic layer of protection for Nigerian health workers and high-risk groups.
The effectiveness of the stockpile will depend on the speed of the “last-mile” delivery—the process of moving vaccines from central hubs to remote clinics. Logistics remains a challenge in many parts of Central and West Africa, where cold-chain storage requirements for vaccines are difficult to maintain.
The next phase of the rollout involves the determination of specific allocation quotas for affected countries and the establishment of delivery timelines for the first batch of doses.
