Troops of the Joint Task Force North West have killed several terrorists and seized 793 rounds of ammunition during separate military operations in Zamfara and Kaduna states.
The operations, conducted under Operation FANSAN YAMMA on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, are part of a broader, sustained offensive aimed at dismantling terrorist networks across Nigeria’s North-West region. The military’s actions resulted in the recovery of weapons and significant quantities of ammunition, which the military says will hinder the operational capacity of the groups involved.
In Zamfara State, troops engaged terrorists in a firefight, leading to the neutralisation of the combatants and the recovery of weaponry. Similar tactical successes were recorded in Kaduna State, where the Joint Task Force intercepted high volumes of ammunition intended for further attacks on rural communities and security checkpoints.
Security Challenges in North-West Nigeria
The North-West region, particularly Zamfara and Kaduna, has remained a volatile corridor for banditry, mass kidnappings, and insurgency. These groups often operate from dense forests, using the terrain to launch raids on villages before retreating into hideouts. Operation FANSAN YAMMA was established to coordinate intelligence-led strikes and maintain a permanent security presence in these high-risk areas.
The recovery of 793 rounds of ammunition is a tactical win, as the Nigerian military continues to struggle with the proliferation of small arms and light weapons smuggled across porous borders. Military officials have previously noted that denying terrorists access to ammunition and operational bases is the primary method for reducing the frequency of village raids.
