Tony Elumelu Joins Dangote, Rabiu, Others as Nigeria’s Newest Billionaire

Nigeria has a new billionaire in its ranks, and his name is Tony Elumelu. The business mogul, known for his leadership in banking, investment, and philanthropy, now joins the elite league of Nigerian billionaires alongside Aliko Dangote, Abdul Samad Rabiu, and Mike Adenuga.

The rise of Tony Elumelu’s fortune

Tony Elumelu’s net worth has surged to an estimated $2.15 billion, according to MoneyCentral. His wealth comes from his vast investments, primarily through Heirs Holdings, a company that controls significant stakes in several industries, including banking, energy, hospitality, and insurance.

One of the key drivers of his fortune is Transnational Corporation of Nigeria (Transcorp), where he holds a substantial share. Transcorp’s stock price has seen an impressive rise in recent years, increasing the overall market value of his investments. As of 2024, his family’s stake in Transcorp stood at 35.93%, totaling 3.65 billion shares.

A dominant force in banking

Beyond Transcorp, Elumelu is a major shareholder in United Bank for Africa (UBA), one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions. Through both direct and indirect holdings, he owns billions of shares in the bank. His stake in UBA alone is worth over $63.69 million, reinforcing his financial strength.

UBA’s impressive financial growth has contributed to his increasing wealth. The bank’s gross earnings soared by 83.2% in 2024, reaching ₦2.398 trillion, a clear indicator of its robust performance.

Expanding influence in energy and insurance

Elumelu’s business empire stretches far beyond banking. His Heirs Holdings Group has deep interests in energy, insurance, and capital markets. His ownership in Heirs Energies, a key player in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, accounts for a significant portion of his fortune.

Additionally, Heirs Insurance Group, which includes Heirs Insurance and Heirs Life Assurance, is growing rapidly, further adding to his net worth. Other assets such as real estate and cash reserves also contribute to his increasing wealth.

The billionaire club just got bigger

With this rise, Tony Elumelu now stands among Nigeria’s most influential billionaires. While Aliko Dangote remains the richest Nigerian with a staggering $28.1 billion fortune, and Abdul Samad Rabiu continues to expand his empire, Elumelu’s addition to this league is a significant milestone.

His success is a testament to strategic investment, long-term planning, and a deep understanding of Africa’s business landscape. From banking to energy, Elumelu’s influence continues to grow, proving that Nigeria’s billionaire class is expanding with power players shaping the nation’s economy.
