Top 3 Beer Industries Driving a ₦1.9 Trillion Market in Nigeria

The beer industry in Nigeria has become a strong part of the country’s market for everyday products. Talk about the Lagos parties or a small-town celebrations, beer is one of those things you’ll almost always find, bringing people together and driving a big chunk of local business, too.

Even with tough times like rising prices, unstable exchange rates, and lower spending by people, Nigeria’s beer market is still strong.

In 2024, the value of Nigeria’s beer market reached about ₦1.9 trillion. This growth was made possible by the high demand from local customers and the smart business strategies of the biggest beer companies.

Three big companies are behind this success: Nigerian Breweries Plc, International Breweries Plc, and Guinness Nigeria Plc—these three control much of the beer market.

They have large supply chains, many popular brands, and play big roles on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Each one has its own way of doing business, but they all contribute to shaping beer culture and the economy in Nigeria.

Nigerian Breweries Plc

Nigerian Breweries started in 1946. It is the oldest and biggest beer company in Nigeria. It is owned by Heineken N.V. Its products include well-known drinks like Star Lager, Gulder, Heineken, Amstel Malta, and Fayrouz.

Performance & Financials:

  • 2024 Revenue: ₦1.1 trillion
  • Assets (March 2025): ₦1.14 trillion
  • Pre-Tax Profit in Q1 2025: ₦69.99 billion
  • Estimated Market Share: Around 50–55%

In 2025, Nigerian Breweries made a big recovery. The year before, it had lost ₦65.6 billion. It turned things around by cutting costs, improving how it works, and selling more mid- and high-priced brands. Still, the company has a large debt of ₦107 billion, which could cause problems for future growth.

It has many factories across the country and a wide distribution network, so it can reach customers in cities and villages. Its strong brand and smart advertising have made it a favourite among Nigerians and investors.

 International Breweries Plc

International Breweries is part of AB InBev, the world’s biggest beer company. It came to Nigeria in 2008 but grew much bigger after joining with three other companies in 2017. Its famous brands include Budweiser, Trophy, Hero, and Beta Malt.

Performance & Financials:

  • 2024 Revenue: ₦489 billion
  • Q1 2025 Revenue: ₦173.6 billion
  • Market Cap (June 2025): ₦1.84 trillion
  • Stock Growth So Far in 2025: +97%

Although it generates less revenue than Nigerian Breweries, International Breweries is strong in Nigeria’s southwest and southeast. Trophy is very popular in Yoruba areas, and Hero is loved in the East.

Investors are paying attention to this company because it has made big gains in 2025. Its stock value has nearly doubled. This success comes from its low-cost business model and its focus on areas that are not well served yet.

The company also follows new trends, like making drinks with less alcohol and offering more malt drinks for health-conscious customers. With support from its strong parent company, it is set for long-term success.

Guinness Nigeria Plc

Guinness Nigeria is known for strong flavours and high-quality beers. Its main drink is Guinness Foreign Extra Stout. It was one of the first beer companies listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Previously, it was owned by Diageo, a British company, but in 2024, Diageo sold 58% of it to Tolaram Group, a Singapore-based company operating across West Africa.

Performance & Financials:

  • 2024 Revenue: ₦299.5 billion
  • Q1 2025 Revenue: ₦118.3 billion
  • Pre-Tax Profit in Q1 2025: ₦10.28 billion
  • Stock Growth So Far in 2025: +28%
  • Estimated Market Share: Around 18%

Though Guinness makes less money and has a smaller market share, it is strong in the premium beer section. It keeps attracting younger people by introducing ready-to-drink products, flavoured beers, and non-alcoholic options.

But it is also facing higher production costs. In early 2025, it spent almost 89% of its revenue on making products, compared to 70% the year before. Still, it is making profits again, and with Tolaram now in charge, it looks ready to grow in new and better ways. Tolaram plans to focus more on Nigerian customers and changing tastes. If it works, Guinness could become a leaner and stronger company.
